Last week my Grandma turned 85. To celebrate, we had a big dinner at the Bluebird in Logan. We had quite a lot of family there, missing only those that live too far to make the trip. We had a good time celebrating with Grandma, and she did too, as you can see. My Grandma is doing great at 85. She is in great health, but unfortunately broke her wrist a few weeks ago. This put a crimp in our plans for her birthday, but we pressed forward. My Grandma has wanted her entire life to learn to play the accordion. Not long ago, we saw an article in the paper about a girl in Logan who teaches accordion lessons, so my sister thought it would be fun to have her come to the party and play and then afterwards we'd tell Grandma that we were going to pay for her to have accordion lessons. Sadly, her wrist isn't cooperating, but as soon as she's fully recovered she'll be able to start. Here's a photo of the accordion player.Oddly enough, it turns out I had a class with her at BYU. We were both in Paul Kerry's Jewish History class and I actually remember her bringing her accordion to class one day and playing us a Jewish folk song. She played three songs for us, including our family anthem, "I Am a Little Gypsy Girl." To see evidence of our extremely lame family, view the video below. Try to ignore my blaringly loud, awful voice, the camera is right in front of my face. I probably shouldn't even post this, but I thought it might be fun for everyone to see how dorky we are. We sing this song every Christmas Eve at our family party. This is only the final chorus, where we declare that we are the Gutke's and will forever reside in Cache Valley. :-) All in all, it was a good party despite my neice Megan's complaints. She said "What kind of a birthday party is this? There's no balloons, no streamers..." I can't blame her, we didn't even have cake! Although there was pie. Here's me and the birthday girl.Happy Birthday Grandma! We love you!
I am so sad I missed the party. However, I am getting used to missing things. Love the video! :) And our fam is a bunch of dorks. But at least we are a bunch of dorks having fun!
By the way that is a GREAT picture of you and Grandma!
Oh boy....love it! I love the fact that we actually sing that song on Christmas of all holidays. What does a gypsy and Christmas have in common??? Only our family song.
Howdy! My name is Michael Brian Lundberg. I was born and raised in Logan, Utah and lived there my entire life before moving to St. Petersburg Russia to serve an LDS mission. I am a graduate of Brigham Young University and currently attend law school at the University of Utah. I originally set up this blog to keep my family and friends informed of my experiences working in Washington DC (hence the name of the blog) as an intern in Orrin Hatch's office. Due to popular demand I have kept it up. I hope you enjoy learning all things about Mike.

I seriously can't believe you posted that video.
You're right. We've been dorks longer than the word dork has been around.
I am laughing so hard at that song!!! WHy is that your family theme song????
P.s. The girls in RS were freaking out thinking I had not shown and there was no lesson!
I love your Grandma too!

No streamers? No cake? Man, I am glad I am not turning 85. I still need streamers and cake! No birthday is complete without cake!
